Feeling respected and valued at work is vital for a company’s morale and culture. If workers do not feel respected by their peers and supervisors, they may begin to search for work elsewhere.  The benefits of a respectful workplace include better morale, teamwork, lower absenteeism, lower turnover of staff, and improved productivity. Low turnover may not initially seem critical to your bottom line, but turnover costs can be expensive. The Saratoga Institute suggests that the average internal cost of turnover ranges from a minimum of one year’s pay and benefits to a maximum of two years’ salary. Other research indicates that total turnover costs can reach as high as 150% of an employee’s base salary.

A more respectful workplace runs more efficiently in many categories, so how can you foster respect in your organization? In OpenSesame’s free course of the week, Eve Ash and Peter Quarry discuss what actually constitutes respect, the different types of respect, and why respect is important. They identify the benefits of a respectful culture and how in turn these are a key predictor of appealing places to work. Get the free course here
